Panel discussion on 27.09 in Basel: Open health data, a recipe for healthy innovation?

Health is increasingly also a question of data. The development of the health system and of new medicines, as well as personal well-being, depend on it more and more – we are in the middle of a data revolution. Experts, entrepreneurs and citizens face the question of how it can be shaped so that, in the end, everyone benefits from more transparency and innovation thanks to open health data.

On 27.09.2012, Opendata.ch and the TagesWoche invite you to a panel discussion on “Open Health Data”, a topic of the future at the intersection of life sciences, health economics and data protection. The speakers are:

  • Dr. Marcos García Pedraza, biotech entrepreneur and start-up coach
  • Dr. Luzi Rageth, Managing Director of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Qualitätssicherung in der Chirurgie (Working Group for Quality Assurance in Surgery)
  • André Golliez, expert in open data and IT in the public sector, consultant and entrepreneur
  • Dr. med. Martin Denz, President of the Swiss Society for Telemedicine and eHealth

The hosts and discussion partners are David Bauer and Hannes Gassert, two well-known innovators at the crossroads of media and technology.

What if patients could play a more active role in the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of a medical problem through the possibilities of data analysis? What effects would be seen in the choice of types and forms of treatment, and what impact on health costs is conceivable? What do doctors and health authorities think about publishing non-personal health data so that it is freely available and usable? What innovative applications “Open Health Data” could make possible, and what needs to be considered – ethically, politically and economically – will be discussed intensively on the evening of 27 September.

The panel discussion is the kick-off for the make.opendata.ch Hackdays on the same topic, taking place on Friday 28 September and Saturday 29 September. There, designers, programmers, experts and citizens of all kinds will meet to work with open data on practical apps and exciting visualisations on the topic of health – in Basel at Unternehmen Mitte and at the same time in Geneva at the HEAD art school.
