Looking Back at the Fourth Open Farming Hackdays: Innovation in Agriculture

From 22 to 23 March 2024, the fourth Open Farming Hackdays took place at the idyllic Liebegg Agricultural Centre. More than 70 creative minds from various sectors gathered in Gränichen on that Friday morning, full of enthusiasm and eager to get going. Among them were representatives from agriculture, development, engineering and many more, all united by their passion for innovation in agriculture.

The kick-off was opened by Matthias Müller, Head of the Aargau Agriculture Department, with motivating words that inspired the participants to develop innovative solutions for agriculture. After an introduction by the organisers, the Liebegg Agricultural Centre, Hightech Zentrum Aargau and Opendata.ch, the 20 different challenges were presented by the challenge owners. In the end, work continued on ten projects over the next two days.

After a hearty lunch, the teams began their work in the spacious premises of the Liebegg Agricultural Centre. The surrounding natural landscape, including nearby Liebegg Castle, provided an inspiring backdrop for the participants’ ideation and creativity.

The projects were as diverse as the participants themselves. From developing platforms to combat invasive plants and using ML cameras to promote biodiversity to digital mouse control – the ideas were positively bubbling over. Each project was unique and bore witness to the innovative power of this event.

The good weather even allowed one team to work outdoors, which further strengthened the collaborative atmosphere and team spirit. The teams then kept tinkering with their solutions late into the night.

On Saturday morning, too, the participants were not distracted by the mild weather. They continued their work with full energy, supported by the excellent catering of the Liebegg Agricultural Centre, which made sure nobody ran out of steam.

At the final presentations on Saturday afternoon, the participants proudly showed what they had achieved over the past two days. The challenge owners’ enthusiasm and satisfaction with the results was clearly palpable. One particularly creative team surprised the audience with a tractor as the centrepiece of its presentation, which caused a lot of laughter and great interest.
