The first Smart City Hackathon takes place on 24 & 25 June 2022 in Wetzikon!
The challenges of our time do not stop at the gates of our cities. Do you want to help shape the city of the future? Take part in the Smart City Hackathon and develop new digital solutions for the town of Wetzikon in interdisciplinary teams within 32 hours!

The smart city is a comprehensive concept and understanding of how cities can develop further in a way that conserves resources and makes them more liveable. The political development of the town of Wetzikon into a «smart city» was initiated by a postulate of the FDP & the town council was invited to draw up a smart city strategy. In 2021, parliament referred the postulate for further action. With town council resolution 269, the town council confirmed its intention to develop a smart city strategy and to launch further projects within the town administration or to support them together with other stakeholders. The Smart City Hackathon is one of these projects.

Why a Smart City Hackathon?
Digitalisation, which has already fundamentally transformed many industries in recent years, is only just beginning in cities. We want to harness the potential of optimising workflows and processes in these complex environments to create the city of the future!
Companies, institutions and public infrastructure generate large amounts of data that are used only partially or not at all. Making better use of unused data for projects and new services is in the interest of these organisations, but above all in the interest of citizens and society. As part of the Smart City Hackathon, data will be made available in the context of the town of Wetzikon for the development of creative ideas and first prototypes.

How can I take part?
The Smart City Hackathon is open to anyone who is interested. Our goal is to bring together interdisciplinary teams who develop new ideas and solutions within two days.

How much does it cost to take part in the Smart City Hackathon?
Thanks to our sponsors and partners, the Smart City Hackathon is free of charge.
Do I need a project idea or a team to take part?
No. You can come with an idea or as a team, but it is not necessary. At the start of the hackathon, various project ideas and challenges will be presented. You can work on the project idea that inspires you most.
Is the Smart City Hackathon only for developers?
No, our hackathons are aimed not only at developers, but also at designers, energy specialists, journalists, lateral thinkers & doers. Please register here.
Do I have to stay for all 32 hours?
No, that is not strictly necessary.
To contribute to the success of the project you have chosen, however, it is important that you agree with your team when and on what you will work.
What is the official language?
The language of the Smart City Hackathon is German. Within the teams you are of course free to decide which language you use with each other.
What do I need to prepare?
The most important thing: a laptop!
It would also be great if you familiarised yourself in advance with Slack, Miro and, if still needed, Zoom, and had a look at the challenges on our project platform .
What happens afterwards?
One thing is clear: the results of the Smart City Hackathon remain the property of the team.
With the Smart City Hackathon projects we want to achieve a long-term and sustainable impact. Accordingly, the partner organisations are happy to continue supporting and promoting promising projects and results as best they can.
