Chatbots, open data and natural language processing (NLP): digitalisation offers numerous opportunities for the Swiss legal system. At the Open Legal Lab, we develop innovative solutions for the legal sector together. Meet legal scholars, designers and programmers and spend two days building the legal system of the future.
Challenges
Pre-event (13.04.)
To prepare you ideally for the hackathon and to let you get to know other participants in advance, we warmly invite you to the pre-event on 13 April, 17:00 – 19:00, in the auditorium of BFH Wirtschaft (Brückenstrasse 73, 3005 Bern). At the pre-event you will receive further information about the hackathon, and we will develop or sharpen the tasks (“challenges”). An apéro will follow. You are welcome to register for the pre-event as well via the hackathon registration form.

Why Open Legal Lab?
Digitalisation, which has already fundamentally changed many sectors in recent years, is only just beginning in the legal and judicial sphere. We want to use the potential of information technology in these complex environments to create tomorrow’s solutions to today’s problems!
The Swiss legal system and public administration generate large amounts of data that are still little used or not used at all. Better use of data for projects and new services is in the interest of these organisations, but above all in the interest of citizens and society.
How can I take part?
The Open Legal Lab is open to anyone who is interested. Our aim is to bring together interdisciplinary teams who develop new ideas and solutions together over two days.

The event takes place as part of the Magglingen Legal Informatics Seminar at the Swiss Olympic House in Magglingen. Catering is provided. Hotel rooms are made available for overnight stays.
Results of the Open Legal Lab will be presented on Monday, 1 May 2023, from 15:30 at the Magglingen Legal Informatics Seminar in the auditorium of the Swiss Federal Institute of Sport Magglingen.

How much does it cost to take part in the Open Legal Lab?
Thanks to our sponsors and partners, the Open Legal Lab is free of charge.
Catering (including breakfast), electricity, basic workplace infrastructure and internet are also provided.
Do I need a project idea or a team to take part?
No, you can come with an idea or a team, but it is not necessary. At the beginning of the hackathon, various project ideas and challenges will be presented. You can work on the project idea that inspires you most.
Is the Open Legal Lab only for developers?
No, the hackathon is aimed not only at developers, but also at designers, lawyers, journalists and doers. Please register here.
Do I have to stay on site for 32 hours?
Experience shows that the successful teams are those who work together on site on implementing an idea for the entire time.
What is the official language?
The languages at the Open Legal Lab are German and French. Within the teams, you are of course free to decide which language you communicate in.
What do I need to bring?
Most importantly: don’t forget your laptop. You may also want to bring your notebook, pens etc. However, we will provide you with basic materials such as paper, flipchart, Post-its, food and drinks.
What happens afterwards?
One thing is clear: the rights to the source code created during the Open Legal Lab remain with the teams.
With the Open Legal Lab projects, we want to achieve a long-term and sustainable impact. Accordingly, the partner organisations are happy to continue supporting and promoting promising projects and results as best they can.
