Open Data Student Award 2021

Open data is an indispensable consequence of digitalisation. That is why the Opendata.ch association has decided to endow a student prize. This prize stands for outstanding applications of open data in teaching and continuing education. SBB, Swisscom and Netcetera are on board as sponsors.

The award honours a student work, which is rewarded for the winners with prize money totalling CHF 1000. The award will be presented at the Opendata.ch/2021 Forum on 12 October 2021.

Award criteria

The student work makes exemplary use of Open Data and/or Open Government Data (OGD) relating to Switzerland. Where appropriate, it uses data visualisation and open standards (file formats, web services).

The result can be a written paper or an application. Ideally it stands for Open Science, which also includes Open Source, and is reproducible including raw data and program scripts. Novelty, creativity, cost-effectiveness, documentation, practical relevance and the exemplary use of OD or OGD are assessed. By submitting, the author(s) of the work agree to the submission and to the publication of the work and of the media (photos and videos).

Eligibility

All students at a Swiss higher education institution are eligible. The following forms are permitted:

Coursework at a higher education institution (incl. CAS)
Exercise or internship work
Semester paper, bachelor’s or master’s thesis
Private work by a currently enrolled student

Nomination and submission

Short description (one-pager) incl. illustration
Student work (PDF and/or link to the app)

The submission must be made by the students, complete and on time, before 25 September 2021. Submission by email to andrea.allemann@opendata.ch. The prize will be awarded at the Opendata.ch/2021 Forum on 12 October. The nominees are expected to attend the Forum. No correspondence will be entered into regarding the award.
