Open Data Student Award 2018

Open data is an indispensable consequence of digitalisation. That is why the associations OpenData.ch and CH Open, at the suggestion of Professor Stefan Keller (HSR), have decided to create a student award. This award stands for outstanding applications of open data in teaching and continuing education. SBB, Swisscom, Swiss Post and the IT companies IBM (Switzerland) and Netcetera (Bern/Zurich) are on board as sponsors.

Award

  • The award honours a piece of student work with prize money for the winners, to which each of the parties mentioned above contributes CHF 200.
  • The award is presented at an Opendata.ch conference, for the first time at Opendata/2018.
  • A jury decides on the award.

Award criteria

  • The student work makes exemplary use of open data (*) and/or open government data (OGD) relating to Switzerland.
  • Where appropriate, it uses data visualisation and open standards (file formats, web services).
  • Ideally, it stands for open science, which also includes open source, and is reproducible, including raw data and program scripts.
  • The author(s) of the work agree to the submission and to the publication of the work and the media (photos and videos).

Eligibility

  • All students and alumni of a Swiss higher education institution are eligible.
  • The work is an official piece of coursework that was successfully completed at a higher education institution (including continuing education) and is no more than three years old (as at the call for entries).
  • The work is written in German, French or English.
  • It can be an exercise or internship paper, a semester paper, or anything up to a bachelor’s or master’s thesis. The work may have been produced individually or as a team.

Jury

  • The jury consists of a representative of Opendata.ch, a representative of CH-Open and a representative of the computer science degree programme of HSR Hochschule für Technik Rapperswil.
  • Companies are not represented on the jury, but are duly acknowledged (including with their logo).
  • Jury membership is published and not separately remunerated.

Nomination and submission

  • Nomination is made by a supervisor of the work, a teacher or someone else from the author’s environment, in prior agreement with the authors/students/alumni.
  • The person submitting writes a covering letter (email) explaining, in four to five sentences of their own, why the work deserves the award.
  • Content of the submission (in addition to the covering letter):
    • The original piece of coursework (PDF format).
    • A short description of the work (400 words) with two to three figures (PDF format).
  • The submission must be made in full and on time before 21 June 2018 by email to Professor Stefan Keller. No correspondence will be entered into regarding the award.
