With EPFL and ETH at the Wired Next Fest in Milan

Opendata.ch, with the Urban Data Challenge and together with experts from ETHZ and EPFL, was a guest in Milan and presented the state of play in “urban prototyping” with local public transport data from Geneva, Zurich and San Francisco at the WIRED NextFest . Sophie Lamparter from SwissNex San Francisco and Hannes Gassert from Opendata.ch, Prof. Ian Smith of the Applied Computing and Mechanics Laboratory at EPFL and Prof. Gerhard Schmitt of the Future Cities Laboratory at ETHZ captivated the audience with verve and expertise and, in the intensive panel round that followed, answered the burning questions of the Italian journalists, students and designers. Once again it became clear: international cooperation at the level of cities, from maker to maker and from researcher to researcher, is a model with a future, an idea worth pursuing further.

Opendata.ch thanks the publisher of WIRED Italia and the Istituto Svizzero and sees this excursion to Milan above all as one thing: an excellent foretaste of the Open Knowledge Conference in Geneva this coming September! The community is ready, research certainly is, and the administration is just getting going – things are moving in Switzerland!
