  • Forum

Here you will find the programme, the presentation slides and the pictures of the Opendata.ch/2018 conference.

Opendata.ch/2018 is Switzerland’s leading conference on open data. Every year we shape the national open data debate, with representatives from administration, business, science, politics, journalism, IT and other fields. In 2018 the conference was held on 3 July in St. Gallen by the FHS St. Gallen University of Applied Sciences and the Opendata.ch association.

There was a diverse and dynamic programme focusing on concrete value creation thanks to open data. High-ranking speakers from Switzerland and Europe addressed current topics in keynote presentations and interactive tracks, such as:

– Open data start-ups
– Open Smart Cities
– Open data in science
– Linked Open Data
– Open mobility data
– Blockchain for open data

In addition, the founder of Open Knowledge, Rufus Pollock, presented ‘his vision of an open revolution’.

Unconference

The Unconference, supported by «IT rockt!», put current open data projects and datasets at the centre of the action. They were portrayed online at hack.opendata.ch, regularly promoted via our social channels and presented at the conference by means of a physical installation.

Open Data Student Award

In addition, the first Open Data Student Award, the prize for outstanding applications of open data in teaching and continuing education, was presented.

Parallel afternoon tracks

14:00 - 15:30 Afternoon workshops

The first part of the afternoon programme consisted of six parallel tracks, each devoted to a specific topic.

Open Data Startups

Open Data is a raw material for innovation, especially for startups. But how do startups achieve to draw insights, build features, and create value from open data? We want to pursue this question, with representatives of high-profile startups who do just that.

Hannes Gassert, co-founder of Opendata.ch, Liip and other organisations (moderator)

Felix Hösch, account manager at senozon

Bru Mas Ribera, solution architect at WeGaw

Open Data Science

This track will showcase four applications / platforms built with open research data in mind. The goal is to make participants familiar with key initiatives in Switzerland that can be used by anyone working with data from scientific domains.

Marcel Salathé, professor at EPFL and co-founder of crowdAI.org (moderator)

Donat Agosti, director of Plazi

Roskar Rok, data scientist / software engineer at Swiss Data Science Center

Oleg Lavrovsky, tool fund grantee at Frictionless Data

Option 3: Open Smart City (de, room: 227)

Smart cities means smart energy supply just as much as smart traffic management – but a smart administration and, above all, smart citizens are also part of every smart city! The smart city or municipality is not an end in itself, but a living space for its inhabitants and a place for companies and many other organisations. But what can open data contribute to this? We want to discuss this as vividly as possible with the panellists.

Hans-Dieter Zimmermann, lecturer in business information systems at FHSG (moderator)

Christian Geiger, Chief Digital Officer of St. Gallen

Marcel Baur, city blogger and smart city resident

Stefan Keller, lecturer in information systems at HSR

Option 4: Open Data with Blockchain (en, room: 248)

A panel discussion with three specific user cases on the potential value of decentralised distributed technologies for Open Data. We will focus on questions such as: what kinds of open data projects can benefit from blockchain technologies? What key barriers do blockchain applications still have to overcome? What can / cannot be expected from this technology?

Nikki Böhler, project manager at Opendata.ch (moderator)

Brigitte Lutz, Brigitte Lutz, Data Governance coordinator at Open Government Wien

Manuel Marquez, scientist at CERN Openlab and co-founder of Orvium

Yves-Alain Petitjean, CFO at Procivis and co-founder / CFO of VALID

Option 5: Open Linked Data (en, room: 301)

For some years various entities at the Swiss government started to provide access to data in the form of Linked Open Data. In this panel we will talk about the Swiss LINDAS project, Wikidata and other Linked Data related projects and its future in Switzerland. The panel aims at explaining how Linked Data works and how you can start using it for your own projects.

Adrian Gschwend, director of Zazuko (moderator)

Jean-Luc Cochard, Head of Information Technology Unit at Swiss Federal Archives

Jerven Bolleman, Lead Software Developer at Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics

Marcel Fröhlich, Director Service Delivery, eccenca

Pasquale Di Donato, Project Coordinator swisstopo/COGIS

Option 6: Smart mobility and data (de, room: 306)

What data is needed to make mobility smarter? What else is needed besides public transport data, and what are the enablers for business models in mobility?

Christian Trachsel, head of open data at SBB (moderator)

Rahel Ryf, head of the open data platform for Swiss public transport

Raoul Stöckle, partner at Smide
